Making the nervous system perfect

Neurosciences

India's neurological prevalence is at 14-71 per thousand people with over 3 million suffering from neurological ailments like head injury, spinal injury, brain haemorrhage, brain tumours, hydrocephalus, nerve injuries, spinal tumour’s, disc prolapse, spinal dislocation, atlanto-axial dislocation, spinal dysraphism etc.

Neurological diseases like brain tumours, spinal dysraphism, disc prolapse, brain haemorrhage and modern brain disorders like Parkinson’s are part and parcel of our day to day lives. With growing complexities in the brain, spine, and nerve disorder we need specialised treatment to set the nerves in order. If we check carefully somebody in our family or our relatives has some kind of disorders mentioned above

Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary science that examines the structure and functions of the human brain and nervous system. The Neurosciences Department at Continental Hospitals deals with diseases, disorders, and injuries that affect the human nervous system. Continental Hospitals is acknowledged as one of the best hospitals for the treatment of neurological diseases in Hyderabad and offers advanced treatments and rehabilitation to patients across the globe.

Neurologists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous system are involved in the treatment of neurological conditions. It is the mission of Chavan Hospitals that people with problems in moving, speaking, breathing, learning, chewing etc., should lead normal lives. Familiar nervous issues like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, Multiple sclerosis, and Migraines are also our concerns. In our busy lives, it is equally important to ensure brain, spine and nerves are in better form. Due to accidents, many face brain injury, head injury, spinal injury, nerve injuries, hydrocephalus etc., that leads to neurological disorders.

SIGN & SYMPTOMS

Sometimes symptoms can be emotional like mood swings or emotional outbursts. Physical symptoms include muscle weakness, seizures, difficulty to read/write, loss of sensation, sometimes paralysis. How often you come across people who are not able to feel pain, while touched or temperature. We call it numbness a serious neurological disorder.

Some of you might have undergone sleep issues which you have ignored. Studies tell sleep issues like insomnia, hypersomnia is neurological issues which you may diagnose and treat with the help of experienced neurologists. People in every age group have problems like seeing things blurred or some others having double vision, photophobia (eye discomfort due to light) which are again neurology related that require consulting.

When one gets stroke or bleeding on the brain then it is important to check whether it is a neurological case. Similarly, benign or cancerous brain and spinal tumours have its origin from neurological disorders. In the case of old people, they display exhibit neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Apart from this, chronic pains, head, neck and spine injuries are symptoms of neuro disorders.

CAUSES

In one sense, the neurological disorder can be dangerous. For example, an infection in the entire neurological pathway can lead to dysfunction or paralysis. We can attribute several reasons ranging from lifestyle, anger, wrath, genetics, physical injuries affecting the neck, brain, nutrition-related causes and in other times environmental influences. Causes are important for anyone to understand the reasons behind neurological issues; it can be anyone among your close circle having neurological issues.

Due to various reasons ranging from pollution to genetics, abnormal cells multiply in the brain by growing and dividing. Due to changes in DNA also one gets affected by brain and spinal cord tumours. Other factors like ageing, chronic smoking, exposure to chemicals, working with plastic, petroleum and lead element lead to the growth of tumours. The tumours displace brain tissues resulting in the abnormal multiplication of cells and become malignant.

DIAGNOSIS

We resort to specialized imaging methods to check changes in brain activity or the amounts of particular brain chemicals. Our neurologists perform differential diagnosis also test mental status, mood, and behaviour with tools like a flashlight, reflex hammer, and tuning fork.

To diagnose a genetic disorder, we conduct triple screening like blood samples, testing amniotic fluid and placenta specimen for genetic abnormalities in utero. Positron emission tomography (PET) is used to detect tumours or rouge tissues. This apart, we take a CT scan to check the area of the brain and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose stroke, brain and spinal cord injury.

Common neurological disorders include a pinched nerve, cerebral palsy, autism, hematoma, stem cells, seizures, sinus headache etc. Our experienced neurologists conduct physical exams by feeling the body for lumps or checking the skin colour, to confirm cancer. They also use Intravenous (IV) gadolinium-enhanced MRI to get a clearer picture of brain tumour. Also we resort to biopsy, Angiogram, Spinal tap, Electrodiagnostic tests, Myelogram, Ultrasound imaging test to diagnose neurology.

TREATMENT

Like other diseases, early detection plays a crucial role in treating neurological disorders. We use options like corticosteroids, levodopa to treat the neurological disorder with the prescription of our neurologists. Chavan Hospitals has a dedicated team of neurosurgeons with multiple sub-specialisations like DNB Registrars, neuro-aestheticians. A minimally invasive endonasal endoscopic surgery helps in removing lesions through the nose. Similarly, an invasive neuroendoscopy helps to remove brain tumours. Deep brain stimulation is a procedure to cure Parkinson’s. At our multispecialty institution, we perform brain tumour surgery, epilepsy surgery, pituitary surgery, deep brain stimulation for malicious tumours.

Chavan Hospitals have a specialized and dedicated ‘Emergency Stroke Program’ to treat acute stroke patients. The program consists of a “RAPID ACTION TEAM”, a multidisciplinary team comprising ER physicians, Neurologists, Neurointerventionalists, Imaging Specialists, Emergency Technicians and Nurses. The team is activated the moment a patient with facial and arm weakness, and speech disturbance (FAST) arrives into our Emergency Department
